Dachshund Secret #2: Created as Big Love Bugs
Mom said we just celebrated Groundhog Day! We said, “What?”! How could a varmint like a groundhog have its own holiday? Yes, they are kind of cute, but what possible contribution could they be making to the human world enough to have their own holiday? We feel a National Dog Holiday needs to be created!
Groundhog Day! What the heck!
We asked Mom what this was all about and how it got started. She said she wasn’t sure, but the groundhog is able to predict the length of the winter!! Huh? We scoffed. Have you seen the size of their brains? We are not buying that lie. We told Mom, “Do you realize they live underground?” Then she got into some explanation about seeing a shadow or something. We said we see our shadow all the time and nobody is asking us to predict the future and giving us a national dog holiday.
We Need Our Own National Dog Holiday
I told Mickey we were going to have to think of a holiday for dachshunds, or at least dogs. If the human world wants an animal holiday it should be a national dog holiday, not varmints like groundhogs. “Mickey, what do you think we add to human lives? Why do they choose to live with us? Think, think, think…” ”Well”, Mickey said, “I’m not sure, I just know I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, I love Mom very much.” Tobie said, “That’s it, LOVE!“ We bring lots and lots of love into their lives.
Letter to the President
Let’s write a letter to the President of National Holidays and request they make a National Holiday for Dachshunds, well all dogs. After all, who better to represent the canine world than the independent, strong willed, courageous dachshund? Mickey, go get me a whole ream of paper, we have a lot of evidence for this request. Mickey said if you actually want them to read the request, keep it short and use bulleted points. Good thought Mickey, another reason to have dachshunds submit the request, we know how to keep things short.
Dear National Holiday President:
On behalf of all dogs, we would like to request a National Holiday in honor of all the LOVE we freely give to humans. We believe wholeheartedly no other person or animal offers the unconditional love we give freely to our persons who are our best friends. To prove this, we will take the Bible definition of love from the creator himself.
I Corinthians 13:4-7 states, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres
Boy Mick, that really sounds like a definition of us dogs. Let’s give examples of our character for each description:
God’s Definition of Love
*Patient – How long do we wait by the door for Mom to come home every day? How long do we snuggle beside Mom?
*Kind – I always lay near Mom when I know she doesn’t feel well. Or do you remember when she was crying and I licked her tears away? I even remember when I had my last surgery, you brought me your favorite toy and laid beside me, thanks Mickey.
*Humble – You know Mickey outside of asking for the national holiday, I can’t remember even asking for a “thank you” for all we contribute. We find so much pleasure in just serving and giving, that is our reward.
*Easily angered – We never get angry at Mom. Yeah, the only time we get angry is when those pesky squirrels and rabbits get too close to the house.
*Keeping a record of wrongs – (I can’t think of anything wrong Mom has ever done.) You know I don’t write down how many times Mom is late on diner, taking me to the bathroom or working too long each day and not spending enough time with us.
*Always protects & hopes – We are experts at protecting. We protect the house from squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, strange people, I mean the list could go on and on. And because Mom is always faithful to us we know we can hope in her.
True Love is a Rare Thing
Mr. President, the longer we live the more we realize how rare true love is. It seems humans often have hidden agendas in showing love. But God built into dogs a genuine sense of loyalty and love. Dogs don’t really care about all the material possessions or trying to manipulate people for better things. We only really care that our human family is taken care of well.
Isn’t is amazing that we were created to only care about spending time with our person and helping when we can. I am not sure we can fully express how people feel about their relationship with dogs, so let me give you some quotes to think about:
Queen Victoria in the old country said, “Nothing will turn a man’s home into a castle more quickly and effectively than a dachshund.”
“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive.” Gilda Radner
“No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich.” Louis Sabin
“A dog will teach you unconditional love. If you can have that in your life, things won’t be too bad.” Robert Wagner
“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” Josh Billings
“I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source.” Doris Day
Someone even once said of us, “God couldn’t be physically with us so he gave us dogs…& notice Dog spelt backwards is God & they both show unconditional love!!
“Happiness is a warm puppy.” Charles Schultz
We don’t believe that the groundhog is going to have this kind of following and/or have this much attention from the human world. Honestly they can’t because people don’t really choose to live with groundhogs. They choose us dogs, and why not, we are man’s best friend. How can a best friend not have a national holiday.
Our Service
I think we should also mention all the contributions canines, even dachshunds, have made to fight for this country in our armed services. Have you ever heard of Sergeant Stubby? What an amazing little guy, a great documentary to watch. And Mr. President of National Holiday’s may we recommend you read “Dachshund Secret #1” on how helpful we are to the people we love at home.
Maybe since some believe we are a great role model of unconditional love we should at least be the face of this Valentine’s Day holiday coming up. But on second thought, we believe we shouldn’t even have to share, we should have our own day. And may we suggest you call it, “National Dog Day – A celebration of LOVE” or better yet, “National Dachshund Day – A celebration of LOVE”
~ Sincerely, From Dogs Everywhere
If you feel the same way we do, let’s start a petition to get the ball rolling (get it)…. Can’t think of a more exciting way to express our UNCONDTIONAL LOVE!!!
Keep givin’ and recievin’ love
