Halloweiner
At our house, we don’t really celebrate Halloween the way most “people” do . We prefer to call the celebration “Halloweiner”. And no, we do not believe it is a self absorbed reference to us. It is just that over the years we’ve chosen to celebrate our version in different ways with a variety of costumes. With October being the month that Halloweiner is typically celebrated, we thought we would take this time to share some of the ways we have participated over the years.
Getting Started
Our big brother Ty, was the first to celebrate Halloweiner. His mom thought it would be funny to dress him in a bun costume. Why everyone thinks a wiener dog in a bun costume is funny is beyond us – we don’t see anything funny about it at all, in fact that costume is the most frightening thing about the celebration! Way too scary for us!!
Regardless, Ty bravely got in his bun costume and hit the neighborhood. He decided to give out treats to all of his friends. Ty thought that it would be better to give than to get on Hallowiener. He wanted everyone to taste Mom’s homemade treats, we love them, and Mom says they are good for us. We don’t know about that, but they are scrumptious. If you would like to try them click here. We have passed out treats to our friends a few times over the years and they love them.
Twins?
For multiple reasons we told Mom that the bun costume has got to go. We needed a new look something less scary to us. We went through different ideas, but dressing us as twins was decided. We told them, this is no good, how could anyone mistake us for twins! They say people always tell them we look alike, but everyone can see this is not true. Am I right or am I right? I think our Mom’s did this because they have no decision making skills!
The first Hallowiener costume that I remember is Ty and I dressing up like pumpkin heads. Can you believe this is what they came up with? We were wondering if the bun was a better idea?! All of us weenies are pretty submissive to clothes, and so we generally just agree to what our Mom’s decide.
Parties & Parades!
It was about this time we found a very exciting event! We discovered that there are pet parties/parades for dogs and they usually have costume competitions. So, we said we need a better idea than pumpkin heads! So the next idea was the best yet.
Ty and I were best friends from the start, we needed a costume that would display our friendship, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, yes perfect. It was very fitting for us, the pair is adorable, they love eating and have a spring in their step, just like us. Ty was Pooh Bear, because he was a little short and stubby and of course, I Tobie was Tigger. I was a natural and besides I was taller.
Ty LOVED wearing his Pooh Bear suit. In fact, he would wear Pooh Bear throughout the year, even if it wasn’t Hallowiener. He especially liked wearing Pooh Bear in the winter after a bath. He said something about it being warm and cozy, but I think he just had to draw attention to himself. I do have to say, we made a super handsome duo, excuse me, Mom says “cute duo”!
The Farmer & The Cow
We went as Pooh and Tigger for a few years, until we felt we need a new image, you know something more mature. So we began to brainstorm on a new duo. Ty was getting a little older and said he didn’t care as long as he didn’t have trouble walking.
I already had a pair of bibbed overhauls in my wardrobe, so I really put my mind to work and decided on the perfect match. Of course a “Farmer and his Cow”! With my height again, naturally I would be the farmer and Ty could be the cow. I’m not sure it was the best choice for Ty, he had trouble with his short stubby legs. Those utters gave him all kinds of problems, dragging the ground and stepping on them. He said God knew what he was doing leaving utters off of weiner dogs. Mom said it was a good lesson for us though, in spite of Ty’s utter problem he LOVED these costume parties. He would wag and smile the whole time. There’s just something about dressing up and parading around while having strangers compliment you about how cute you look, that’s really exciting for us!
I ended up having my own issues as a Farmer. I hated the hat! Mom went to the craft store and bought the most uncomfortable and weirdest smelling hat! That straw hat drove me crazy… I am usually very excited about dressing up and never fight the process. In fact, I like to help Mom pick out my clothes never once complaining. But not that farmer’s hat! They tied it around my neck and I just could not stand it. I did my best to try to tear that hat to shreds. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind wearing costumes. Like I said, I love to wear clothes, especially in the winter. But that hat was too much, I had serious regrets about suggesting this duo. It didn’t work well for me or Ty. Wearing it was the worst thing they have ever made me do. I wore it for a little while at the party, but was very glad when they took it off.
Monster’s, Inc.
It wasn’t too long after the Farmer and Cow costume, that I got my baby brother, Mickey. As you know, we were best buddies right away and we wanted a new costume duo to represent us. After thinking about how the farmer and cow costumes went, we spent a lot more time thinking about famous best friends. Our Mom’s suggested what seemed to be a natural choice, Mike and Sulley from the Monsters, Inc. movie. I agreed if I could be Sulley because I naturally have the hair, and Mickey was still a little guy, so he would make a better Mike.
We liked this image and one year, we got invited to participate in a Trunk-or-Treat event at a local school. Here we come as Mike & Sulley with the car decorated like the Monster’s Inc., factory. Sitting in the car and passing out candy to all the little kids was easy and a lot of fun. I was fine with all of those kiddy monsters, Mickey on the other hand, does not like Storm Troopers from Star Wars, he barked at all of them. However, ironically he did not mind darth vadar, you never know what’s going on in the head of a baby brother?? He said darth and him were both black in color, I told him I don’t get it?
Do You Think We Are Scary?
What do you think, do we look like a couple of scary monsters? We were at the party in our costumes handing out candy and a lady came up to us with her little girl. She said that the little girl was afraid of dogs and would never pet one. But when the little girl saw us dressed as Mike and Sulley, her favorite movie, she really wanted to pet us. It made us feel good to be able to help her get over her fears – dressed as monsters, at that! Good thing we were not wearing our bun costumes, would have been to scary of a scene for her!!
After a few years as monsters, we were getting bored and wanted to do something different. Reluctantly Mom talked us into bringing the Farmer and his Cow back to life. I only agreed if I could be the cow this time. An honor to be in my big brother Ty’s role and there was NO WAY I was going to put on that hat! So yes, I went as the Cow dragging my udders on the ground, but Mickey was the Farmer who got stuck with that stupid straw hat. Ha, ha, ha!!! He doesn’t like it, either, but I don’t think he minds it as much as I do, so good for him!
As you can see, we’ve had a lot of fun with Halloweiner over the years. We enjoy going to dog parties and having a good time with all of the activities. We also like giving out treats to both our four-legged and two-legged friends. We don’t like to think of Halloweiner as a scary holiday since Mom got rid of that BUN. We have made it our experience to make friends and to give rather than receive. We hope we have inspired you as well.
HAPPY HALLOWIENER EVERYBODY!!
Keep encouraging & having fun!
